Language Learning Goals May, 2019 – #ClearTheList

Wow! It’s May, and time to make language learning goals and plans for a new month.

As expected, my university course in Biblical Hebrew took up almost all my time. This is what I got up to…

Studying a so-called “Dead” Language in a formal university course has been a huge challenge. We have almost no audio of the language, so I find it hard to conceptualise the sounds I am reading; the Alef-Bet is no longer foreign, but it takes considerable concentration to stop and sound it out. Unless I am really focussing, the script is still just a jumble of shapes. It’s certainly not my preferred method of learning a language. I am doing whatever I can to optimise the process for my learning, but that means hours of research and work on top of the work I have to do for the course, so it’s no small challenge.

Nevertheless, I met my goals – my “Intentional Under Promising” worked well!

GOALS FOR MAY

We are winding up the semester this month, so again I am going to be focussing on Hebrew with not much more planned.

Of course, I still listen to French and Spanish songs, YouTubes, and continually look for opportunities to have conversations in Dutch or French. But until after my exam, I’m not going to ask for anything more from myself.

And you? Und Sie? Et toi? En jij? Og þú? En jy? What are your language learning goals for January and 2019? Let me know in the comments below, and join the community over on the #ClearTheList page.
