Grammatical Agreement (Concord)

Grammatical agreement, or concord, means making sure different parts of a sentence match up in things like gender, number, case, or person.

As an example, in French, one example of grammatical agreement is with adjectives and nouns.

For instance:

  • “Le stylo bleu” (The blue pen): Here, “bleu” (blue) agrees with “stylo” (pen) in gender and number, both are masculine singular.
  • “Les stylos bleus” (The blue pens): In this case, “bleus” (blue) agrees with “stylos” (pens) in gender and number (an added ‘s’); both are masculine plural.
  • “La voiture bleue” (The blue car): Here, “bleue” (blue) agrees with “voiture” (car) in gender (an added ‘e’ on ‘bleu’) and number; both are feminine singular.
  • “Les voitures bleues” (The blue cars): Now, “bleues” (blue) agrees with “voitures” (cars) in gender and number (shown by adding ‘s’ to both words); both are feminine plural.
