Haitian Creole
Haitian Creole, also known simply as Creole, is a language based primarily on 18th-century French and influenced by Portuguese, Spanish, English, Taíno, and West African languages.
It developed in the context of slavery on the island of Hispaniola in the French colony that is now Haiti.
Haitian Creole is one of Haiti’s two official languages, alongside French, and is spoken by nearly all of Haiti’s population.
Distinct from other forms of Creole found in the Caribbean, it features its own unique grammar and vocabulary structures.
